Varsity Swimming · Aqua Knights Place 10th at States/Buff ’23 Brings Home State Title


Sophomore Scotty Buff after his record breaking State Title in the 100 Fly.

The St. Francis Aqua Knights finished 10th overall with a team total of 94 points at the D1 State Championship meet on Saturday. Along with the 10th place finish, sophomore Scotty Buff brought home his first individual State Title in the 100 Fly. The highly talented sophomore broke the OHSAA state record with a time of 46.59 breaking the previous record of 47.01. Coming into Saturday Buff had a personal record of 48.21 in the 100 Fly, making his state record time of 46.59 the first time he’s ever broke 48 seconds in that swim. With this incredible finishing time, Buff is now #8 all time in the 100 Fly 15-16 boys age group. Buff was also named the D1 Boys Outstanding Swimmer.

The Aqua Knights had 5 other individuals compete at the State meet. Senior Spencer Wilson competed in the 200 Free and swam to a 14th place finish with a final time of 1:42.61. Senior John Burnard swam in the 200 IM and 500 Free. Burnard came away with a 5th place finish in the 500 Free with a time of 4:36.65 and finished 20th overall in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.00. Junior Patrick Vitaniemi competed in the 500 Free and finished with a time of 4:48.17 placing him at 24th overall. Sophomore Scotty Buff also competed in the 100 Back and finished state runner-up in a very close swim with a final time of 47.48. The Knights also competed in the 400 Free Relay and 200 Free Relay. The results of those relays can be seen below:

400 Free Relay – 8th place – 3:07.44
