The varsity basketball team (#10 seed in the OHSAA D1 Toledo District) defeated Whitmer (#13) last night, 57-52 in overtime. The game was played at St. Francis in front of a limited crowd of less than 200 spectators. The Knights took a 27-18 lead into half but saw that shrink to only a 7 point difference by the end of the 3rd quarter. Whitmer had a strong 4th quarter, outscoring the Knights 12-5, to force overtime. In the extra time, the Knights controlled the ball, got to the free throw line, and outscored the Panthers 10-5. This is the second victory over Whitmer, winning 64-47 on January 22nd at Whitmer.
The victory advances St. Francis to the sectional final. SFS will take on Southview (at Southview) on Friday at 7 pm. The Knights and Cougars are very familiar with each other. Southview prevailed 45-35 on January 23rd. The two squads have also seen each other in the playoffs the past two seasons – Southview winning 55-47 in the 2020 sectional final & St. Francis winning 65-53 in the 2019 sectional final. Tickets for Friday’s game are only available to players and coaches.
St. Francis now has a record of 7-11 and finished the regular season 4th in the TRAC with a conference record of 4-3. Season results can be found here.
